To answer Billco about the last paragraph, I think the 'other man' hasn't expressed his intentions yet to the girl he's getting along so well with.
I think he's hitting it off so well with the girl, that he's driving a wedge between her and her bf, because he has a connection with her that she doesn't have with her bf. Even though the bf may be a stand-up a guy and all, that doesn't matter because they are falling apart because of him.
At this point, even if the 'other man' were to keep his distance, the damage he caused is already done, and the girl and her bf's relationship falling apart would be 'happenin' anyway'.
The girl may not be totally aware that she's fallen for the 'other man', but he knows that he better confess his intentions to her soon because her bf is going to put two and two together soon enough.
