I think this song is about baptism. Cause in the sacrament of baptism we are to die to sin and this world and rise a new creation. And when you die to the world you also must let yourself die as well (To dance upon the ashes of my burned up little plans.). The tradition of baptism was that they would take you to a river and hold you under water three times. But they would also hold you under until you struggled to breath to symbolize you dying. And when you die with Christ you rise a new creation, one that doesn't need air.
