Lust, ambition and greed are fruitless attempts at living your dream. Lust will make you long for a monogomaous (spelling) relationship, ambition will let you down, and greed leaves you with more shit than you need.
"They burned whatever they could steal"
Meaning they destroyed whatever was gained (out of guilt?), so it was a waste of effort.
Falling off horses and riding humans is what I get out of the second verse, meaning, they no longer become abstract, they take on human forms. The serpents and snakes may have to do with the Garden of Evil and the Original Sin, which is I guess being told not to do something but ignoring the warning, so our children are doomed to do the same, that is, finding out for themselves what it means to be sinful and how the reprecussions build up.
I used to think he was saying "We're not your lover, we're your friends", but I just don't know anymore.
Telling sins that we're your friends probably is meant to be ironic, otherwise, it would be contradictory. Maybe it's about calming them down by telling them we're your equals and don't think of ourselves as higher beings.
