To me this song is about a couple ending their relationship and mutually parting ways, but still knowing that they really care about each other. The problem was that they realized that there was something greater out there in the world for them and based upon both their life's situation at that time, they knew they couldn't be together. They had to "find themselves"; understand their true identity first and come to love that before they could love and care for anyone else. ... the bittersweet part is that these two people have been waiting for so long to find someone like each other.
