or maybe she doesnt really love him (the abusive husband) - the song sounds kind of numb, its as though the 'i love you very much' is an automatic response, something she says but doesnt really mean. she just says it, but its empty. she does it to try and stop him...? hence, "pull the string" - its not real, but she keeps saying it, broken record style. thats all she can say, like a speaking dolls with one phrase on its reel. well, i know what i mean, even if im not putting it very eloquently...
