Such an amazing song. I'm surprised that there are no comments on this one.
So well written and the line "Life made rookies of us all in our finest year." is amazing and oh so true. Even at their best, nobody is anywhere near perfect.
Anyway, I've always thought this song to be about someone that's just getting into the real life. Right out of college or maybe even High School.
"Don't look down; you might fall" is saying that you shouldn't doubt yourself and you should always 'keep your head up' and some would say. If you do doubt yourself, you will get nowhere.
"Don't wait up; we'll be fine." is stating how you should never wait around for others if they're holding you up. Just go at the pace you need to go, and your other friends will go at theirs.
"Somehow, we might get it right in our finest year." means that if you keep working at whatever you're trying to accomplish, you will eventually get there, and it will be your "finest year" because of the feeling of success that you feel.
