Actually, the singer of Eels, "Mr E", lost his father when he was 19. 1996, his sister committed suicide, and two years later his mother died in cancer. So, I´m quite sure this song is about the great lost of his family, and that everybody keeps telling him to realize they won´t come back and that he must move on without them. In second verse he sings, "time to put the old horse down" and probably realizes that it´s time for him to get a grip and live along without them.
Think it´s "I need some sleep, you can´t go on like this" in the beginning of the song, and not "you can´t go home like this"...
I really like this song, I lost my father a few years ago and kinda know what it´s like when you can´t understand that you won´t ever see that person again.
