This song has been a favorite of mine since the first time i had heard it! If there was every any song that explins the meaning of everything in life it is this one! It's quite the cliche. Everything in life that looks beautful as a rose would, has something hidden behind it that can hurt you...either physically or mentally. One may not see it at first, but after much time, we are able to see what is swept under the rug (the thorn). Life is full of surprises, not everything is as beautiful as a rose!

@ccassady I think you are correct with your interpretation. I also agree with 1l0vesunsets that the meaning is also that EVERY thing in this world that is good has it's flaws (thorns) and we can choose to focus on the beauty of things or instead nitpick about the perceived flaws of something. Sounds to me like in the song that was all he did to her and it drove her away and now she has found someone new that chooses to see her for her beauty instead and she is happier because of it, and that makes him hurt desperately...
