I think this song is about a young man who got wrapped up in his youth, broke the law and got put in gaol. He's now about to be released and he's thinking about a girl who he left behind.

You and I we used each other's shoulder Still so young but somehow so much older How can I go home and not get Blown away

Possibley refers to the girl who he left and how he's worried about what people (including his girlfriend) will think of him when he returns home. He's a so much older due to him reflecting on his recklessness before he was gaoled (grow up quick in gaol).

You and I had our sights set On something Hope this doesn't mean our days are numbered I got plans for more than a wanted man

Again, tells of the life plans that he and his girlfriend had before he was put away. He hopes that its not over between them due to him wrecking these dreams.

When the war is over Got to start again Try to hold a trace of what it was Back then You and I we sent each other stories Just a page I'm lost in all its glory How can I go home and not get blown away

He's saying how he hopes his relationship will be the same as it was. Reflects on his time in gaol when she wrote to him.

Ain't nobody gonna steal this heart away Ain't nobody gonna steal this heart away Ain't nobody gonna steal this heart away

This is him saying that even though he's been away he still loves the girl and hopes it can be like it was.

This is my take on it if anyone's got better ideas let hear them.

"Got my Cheap Wine and a Three-day Growth"
