i reckon its about a girl who the guy thinks likes him, but for one reason or another, perhaps she feels the same way, or perhaps she is waiting for him to do something, she hasnt made it clear cut enough for the guy that she likes him. as a result, all the guy 'wanted was some evidence that you really like me'.
The maybe verse refers to the guy who is a bit insecure (as xbestfriendx says) about it all, and is waiting for more signals because he thinks going ahead and asking her out might be seen by her as desperate, and he will not be able to develop their relationship, but equally, he is worried he will pass up his chance. So he actually blames the girl for not giving him enough 'evidence':
