It seems to me that this song is about religion and how people use it conveniently. Now that "Superman"/God is gone and turned his back on the world, because he has "broke his back on this world" and dealt with "suffering and vice" and has grown tired. The way the chorus is sung "Oh Lord..." is almost like a cry or prayer. He is gone, they're suffering and now people want to believe in him. But was there as much faith while he was there?
