I love the rhythm of this song...Caribbean maybe? A great tune to drink to at a backyard BBQ. It's one of those tunes that you hear in between sips as you wiggle your shoulders back and forth. You pause and ask whoever's nearby, 'Hey, what song is this? Nice groove, huh.' And just as quickly as you asked, you're back to engaging in the festivities...shoulders still slightly wiggling, but your mind is now elsewhere.

So...Brandy Alexander can be many things. But, for me, the interpretation of this song is about the writer's affair with 'Brandy Alexander', the alcoholic drink...the indifferent, slightly deceptive, confidant.

As I listen to this song, I can imagine the character sitting back and enjoying his somber decline as the liquor overtakes him. Alcohol is a depressant that is widely known for potentially taking us on a twisted journey. Dark thoughts, that we generally suppress when we are sober, slowly rise to the surface. Ironically, this comforts him for no reason other than the fact that it just feels good...the alcohol, that is. The whole second stanza nails this whole concept for me. Especially as he makes references to burning and fire, which are sensations that are felt when drinking hard liquor. Also, when he says, "I see it through your eyes...There's worse ways of getting here. You don't hear me complaining."

But all 'good' things come to an end when Brandy snatches the upper hand, the 'harmonious' relationship abruptly ends ...and yada yada yada...you wake up on the bathroom room floor wondering how you got there. ;)
