well, to me, this song is about a girl who has been doing everything by herself her entire life. she's never had someone to actually rely on, so she got used to being independent and to managing things on her own. and now here he is - the boy who wants to help her, who wants to cook her dinner and who wants to be with her.
and she just can't let go of her old habits, even though he seems to understand her and even though he seems to be perfect for her. she just can't stay and has to move on on her own. which is pretty sad. but I love the lyrics.

As much as she fears destroying this boy her love for him is stronger and wants to live the illusion with him as long as it goes before finaly deciding leaving him as her love for him is to big to keep him and destroy his life (as she views it). On the other hand this boy feels the same strong great karmic love for her as he sees through her and is willing to go through the rabbit hole with her as long as it takes and whatever the cost to his self is, as his love for her is greater than any fear he may has.
However her fear/terror to work on her self is greater than lethal too her, she decides to give up as hard as it is. Preferring to surrender to her doomed self as a survival method and not risking living on her full potential of what life has to offer, for his own sake. Instead of facing her fears through therapy to manage them at a certain point (they never go fully away) (they never cannot change fully).
As i understand the boy sings this song after the end of their story. Although it never really ends, the spark will always be there.
