In the case of this song, yes, it was probably a racial thing. However, it has wider applications than that. This song is about forbidden love of all kinds. It's about anyone who's ever loved anyone whose parents tried to get in the way of the relationship. It's about any love that was ever seen as "different" and that, if stuck with, could be dangerous for everyone involved.

The relationship here is the anantithesis of hatred, but it clearly demonstrates the power and the reach of violent hatred.

It's a horribly depressing song. I listened to it for a week straight and never got sick of it.
