This song is proof that Def Leppard is still writing good songs and can be prevalent. The record company just isn't marketing them properly. This song should have been a new era hit for the group.
Silverwind summed it up pretty well. But, I don't know if, in the last verse, he is just lying to himself. This would be similar to the song, "Missing You," by John Waite, when he says, "I ain't missing you at all." But, you know he is.
I think the girl he lost was one of those special someones and he does want her to be happy. And he does know that time will come when he moves on, but he's got a long, long way to go before he reaches that level of acceptance.
