I think this song is about shedding responsibilities, and straying from the straight and narrow. Now I can't figure out whether or not he's encouraging or discouraging that notion (i.e., "Too may rules, it'll bleed you dry" -- "Too much living is no way to day"). Perhaps he is suggesting finding the perfect balance between the two.
At any rate, this is my favorite song on "Trace". I love how the tempo and Farrar's vocals soften up on the chorus, diverting from the toe-tapping verses and even more upbeat pre-chorus. It's a brilliantly built song.
