i agree with you on the events of the story, but i think the (unreliable) narrator has multiple personalities/is disassociative. he almost taunts the listener by saying "it was done by my double" right after "i took his life by the light of day." i'd be surprised if the last verse wasn't eventually included in a horror movie. i think he thinks that by leaving, he'll leave all of his demons behind.
