I think it's all already been explained in the previous "comments" but I must say, this is one of the most powerful songs on the record. Since he was adopted, I definitely think this is about him trying to communicate with someone (his mother) that's he's supposed to be so close to, but he's lost and he doesn't know how to anymore. I think the part about him lying in his letters is about him telling his adopted parents that he's fine, even if he's struggling with it. The song really shows off his amazing vocals and their ability to make a song just fit. Especially the guitar part during the chorus, the guitar work is great too... Amazing.
