i agree with carrie, but i think that its more specifically about the girl wanting to leave but she keeps coming back and he cant stand it anymore. she asks him to hold her, and he's uncertain "if i were to...." and shes knows that it will all just end up the same as it was all the other times so she wont let him, even though she wants him to. and he finally resolves to let her go off and do what she needs to do without stopping her.
