Lyric discussion by Snapman

This a very beautiful and lyrically complex song, with extensive use of metaphorical imagery. The song is actually about Harry Truman and Hiroshima.

"My life is brilliant My love is pure I saw an angel Of that I'm sure She smiled at me on the subway She was with another man But I won't lose no sleep on that Cause I have got a plan"

This first verse is directly from the perspective of Truman. The first two lines refer to the fact that he's delighted about become President of US, hence why his life is brilliant. However, his new-found delight is soon changed. Truman had a Japanese schoolgirl fettish, and this is what the rest of the verse deals with. He's aggrieveed that he is not the one in the pornographic video, and wishes he was in place of the other guy who she is starring with. Because he is President, he can never be with her. So he makes a plan - to drop a bomb on Hiroshima to get rid of her, so nobody can have her.

The rest of the song is from the perspective of the pilot who dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. The chours "you're beautiful" is the pilot observing the mushroom cloud, which shows Blunt's sense of irony. The "face" being reffered to here is Hiroshima, as it is just a dot on the landscape of Japan.

The second verse is the pilot thinking about a girl in Hiroshima who is about to be killed. The lyrics are self-explaintory here.

I would like to thank James Blunt for writing this beautiful, moving and sensetive song. It's absout time a brave songqriter tackled such issues that others are afraid to write about. Bravo Jim.
