The guy in this song just can't shake the desire for this girl, with whom he obviously had an amazing one night stand. We've all been in love - and lust - like this and it can take over your life, but you learn as you mature to let things go. He's a young guy, obviously (since he mentions failing in school) and that makes it more believable to me. I'm also impressed that Billy was in touch with those emotions to write from that perspective when he was 30. Perhaps it was recalling an obsession of his own, or just relating to the feeling that many young men have experienced. It's a great song lyrically as well as musically.
