I obviously don't know and could be wrong, but I think the gay marriage interpretation is too specific and literal.

Based on the title and all the lyrics, I took it as sort of a political activism song:

"Consider me an object / Put me in a vacuum / free of all conditions / free of air and friction"

I think he's saying politicians will treat us like objects if we never bother to question them or participate in elections. I took the air and friction to mean criticism and questioning of leaders. Ideally, these politicians would want to be in a situation where they make decisions and no one ever questions them, like how Bush supporters said John Kerry was insulting our troops for being critical of the war in Iraq. (the vacuum is not the hoover kind but the kind in phyics describing a situation where there's no atmospher like in space)

"Yea I'll be hanging upside down/ and there I will swing/ for all eternity"

I think this is just saying if you don't spend the time to consider whats going on, you won't know where you stand because you're not educated...you won't know whats right or wrong, whats rightside up and whats upside down.

"Blood on all the pistions/running my transmission"

I thought this compared us to objects again in the eyes' of a leader. Our lives aren't valued and our blood is used to run the "engine" or society they want to create.

"High above I’ll break the law, If it’s illegal to be in love, Leave the hatred, on the cross"

Everything interprets this as gay marriage. I'm not saying they're wrong but I didn't see it as this.

I thought "by fall in love" Vedder is just referring to being passionate about something/anything. If these super conservative groups criticize anyone who disagrees with mainstream decisions, they are in a sense making it illegal to be passionate about your beliefs, and Vedder's saying if its a law to blindly follow, its not a law worth following and he'll break it.

This was poorly written but I just wanted to express my opinion and I hope those who read it could understand it.

Again, I'm not saying I'm write and everyone else on this forum is wrong, it's just what I got from the song which I really liked.
