I think it's more to do with depression, feeling like you have hundreds of problems, it doesn't seem to end, and more just keeps coming.

Onto the chorus, this is questioning how long the depression will last, they want to get out of it, but they feel so helpless so they just want to know when it will end... hence: "On and on, And I just feel helpless how long will this take to wear off?"
So yeah, my interpretation of it ^.^ it might not be right... but I can relate to it from that point of view, and when you feel like that, it's bad.
