My interpretation is that it's about the difficulties, the challenges, and the uncertainties of trying to make it on limited means with someone else. Trying to prove to everyone that it could really work.
The song takes an interesting change of direction, I think, with the couplet when she wonders "who he's picturing when he looks at me and smiles." Is she questioning his faithfulness to her? Also, the last line, "Oh, and look we've come this far." At first I thought this was her feeling a little self-righteous, for having made it with this guy. But upon further reflection, it feels more like a sarcastic statement, betraying her true feelings of disappointment and frustration.
