Ok, so I've confirmed it now. Eirenightshade, Darren is not talking to himself. He is not talking to himself, but it's actually a woman who said that phrase. I also like that explanation too, and as a matter of fact I relate to it in that way: me telling to myself how tricked and manipulated I am being.
But like I said before, this song was quite exactly being inspired by a movie called Strange Days of 1995. The character named Mace (Angela Basset) falls in love with the character of Ralph Fiennes, who is still attached to the memories of an old girlfriend of his (Juliette Lewis) and just keeps on "relieving" them by a futuristic kind of device, so he's never over her and literally lives in the past. So that woman Mace tells him: "Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason." :)
I was glad to finally see that it was that literal. I loved the story of the movie, and I also can relate to the fact of being in love with someone who is thinking about someone else, and you can't find the way to tell that person: "can't you see?"
