So he continued being his friends and doing stuff for him ("kissed his feet"), but when he got the chance he hurt his friend because he never trusted him in the first place ("broke his knees"). Then when he looked into his eyes expecting to see him wanting revenge or anger, he only saw himself and he realized that this person never deserved to be harmed, that he was a good person after all and that he ("I") had the wrong impression of this friend.
