I think of this as the conciounce (sp) of Eric the phantom when he was young and just realizing how his "deformity" affects his life. He knows he'll always be alone, and he accepts this, even though he longs to be loved. "Learn to find your way in darkness" This could have a double meaning. Either this is when he is brought to the opera house and begins to live underground. With little light, he must learn to find his way through the labrynth. That, or it's referring to him having to go about things on his own without expecting help from anyone.
On another note, Mini Driver sings this song beautifully and it's one of my favorites. It puts you in the mind of the phantom.
