Seems to me that it's about a long distance relationship ("Shredded by state lines") gone bad. The two are in love, but the distance proves too difficult for them. The singer sees it coming ("Denying this day, didn't stop it from coming") and, perhaps in an effort to save the relationship, heads out to visit his love interest.

When he finally has to return home ("Press my face up against the glass", like the window of a car maybe), he realizes that as great as the visit may have been, the relationship is going to keep going downhill ("this won't get any easier").

Maybe at this point, the love interest has come to the same realization. The singer tries to keep the relationship from collapsing because he remembers how great it once was to finally love someone and be loved ("Don't let this die, we may never fall in love again") and tries to convince the other person to ride out the hard times ("It's hard but worth the wait when it's over").

It could go two ways after that... Either they break up or stay together. I think that they broke up, personally. In either case, I think that the person that the song is being sung to/about ends up seeing someone else or cheating on the singer, who is understandably upset/hurt/angry ("Now open up wide, fist first down your throat / Where no beauty lies, and rip out what should've been mine").

I'm not sure about the last bit... Maybe he burns the letters or things that were exchanged and drinks to try and make himself feel better ("I'll burn this with torches, and drown in my consideration")?
