I've reached the top of this ladder but what did it matter,
It's on the wrong wall
I thought this bit meant that he'd achieved something or reached a goal (reached the top of this ladder), but it didn't matter because he'd reached that goal in the wrong way (on the wrong wall).
I'm not sure how that fits in with the previous post though...
@ThisismyUsername that makes a lot of sense too. It makes me think of striving for a superficial or selfish goal that is only going to serve myself and when I reach it I find and the ultimate result is loneliness. I really like your interpretation too, it makes more sense like climbing a ladder and reaching the top only to realize it is the wrong thing he was going after or perhaps the strive for perfection, like a mountain you keep reaching the summit and then see that there is an whole other mountain on it that you cannot see...

Or maybe it just means that he was chasing the wrong thing. Or believing in the wrong thing. Attempting so hard only to be disappointed with what you thought was something else?
