It's a play on the "I stand at the door and knock..." verse from the Bible. From somewhere in Revelation I think. I guess from his point of view, he's pointing out how people would do anything to avoid religion and "distract themselves from the sound in their heart". ie. distract themsleves from God knocking on the door and not letting Him in to their lives.
