To me, it seems as though this song is about a dude who is giving up on a particular girl, maybe a first love, who no longer shares the same feelings as he. Perhaps she never did.

"Spinning free" I think is simply being in love. The girl "sweet and simple" is everything to him, and nothing else, no matter how stressful or tragic matters, so he's numbed. While he's in love, he is also numbed from a pain he had most likely never known until now: that of falling out of love.
