Personally, I agree with the previous post that this emphasizes the here and now, but I don't think that what he forsees is an end to the relationship, but rather an end to life, or everything. In any case, the part that touches me the most is that he just wants to stay "out of the way" of anything and everything that might keep him from that 'here and now happiness', because that's all he wants. He's also desperately searching for time but also coming to realize that embracing the moment is not about looking for more time in the future. It's most likely intentionally contradictory to express how we all feel about these things.
