a girl he cares a lot for is being hurt, and it's happening right in front of his face, but the only way he can explain to her how he feels without coming on too strong...so the only time he can tell her how he feels is when she's sleeping and the words hit her ears, but don't really listen (ie the references to the bed; "you're in the next room sleeping and I'm shouting out a song for you", "this bed is too big to sleep in, and I'm dying just to feel you breathe"). when he talks about being bored with hurt himself and finding hell, he's basically saying that he's waited too long to tell her how he feels, and he's in hell, and the only way to get out of it is to open up. but basically the bedroom and the dreaming is all metaphorical and in for interpretation "so dream a good one tonight, I'll listen to the bad ones when they come. get up in my ear till I hear every word." that basically is him saying that he only wants the best for her, but if she does fall into a rut, he'll be there regardless of the situation, and she doesn't have to worry about him leaving.
