I think this song is so appropriate for the end of a relationship. He's singing about the fact that he knows there's no hope for getting back together, which is fine, but he just wants last night to be delusional and then everyone can wash their hands of it. He just doesn't want to leave it how it is, he wants to change it for the last time and then be okay with it.
It's a cool song, but I think, going with the idea of it, that's impossible. You split with somebody, one night's not going to change what that means. But I guess it's that we're human that makes us keep trying.
