Ok, I realise this is a way-out there interpretation and it is by no means complete or without fault...but I'm interested to hear what you think about this.
I think the narrator here is dead and is looking down on his ex-girlfriend from heaven. I think his girlfriend is very near to death. She is having nightmares and flashbacks of an accident that perhaps they were both involved in, causing his death? Or maybe she has attempted suicide and that is why she is near death. I think the narrator is telling her to 'sleep well tonight' as death is nearby and 'the light' will eventually come and take her away into heaven to join him.
'All you've seen has gone, if you dream the truth it will all come clear' - he says that what she is dreaming and having nightmares about is not how it really is. He is reassuring her that death is not so bad, that she will see for herself.
'If you could take a lifetime away...' - he says, if you could take back my death, and make me return from heaven maybe it could have been different.
'We fell like everyone else has, our mark will show where we were for our last time' - we made mistakes like everyone else, but we also made a difference and left our mark on the world.
'If we could take a lifetime away. and make us come down' - the use of the word 'us' implies that the girlfriend has now died too.
'If you could take the hours then maybe we could fall apart, I could stay here' - if we could turn back time, to the time when we were both still alive, maybe he could do something different to make her live and that he would be the one to remain in heaven, whilst she continued to live her life on earth.
