I agree with Katzkittens. This song is obviously about a nuclear bomb and mass genocide. Notice "a raging wave of light vaporized all this life" and "dust replaced their souls"(people are litararily turned into dust in a nuclear bombing) Though it may not necesarily be talking about the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, but rather of a worst case scenario about a nuclear bomb in the future. And it would be quite possible for someone to run into the fields while a nuclear bomb is going off, it depends on how far away you are. You could see a huge wave of light and a mushroom smoke thing in the distance (several kilometers away) and be so scared you could run...duh.
And that thing about a petrified family pointing their hands is something more figurative than literal. That could indicate that the singer/writer of the song feels terrible grief at the deaths of so many innocent people. What better image than a dead family pointing their hands at you? It is a tragic and striking image.
