I think the song is certainly about making love, but it's a perfect example of Jason Mraz's songwriting skills. Most songs about a similar subject would take a blatant approach to things and the lyrics would often end up being trite and/or crude.
Jason Mraz, on the other hand, uses wordplay and metaphor to get his point across and couples it with a great melody, allowing you to enjoy the song on more than one level. Either as just a good song, or a song with deeper meaning if you want to look for it.
