I love the lines "I don't see myself when I look at the flag"... It would seem to fit in with the theme of the terrors of the Iraq, that he feels no pride when he sees the flag waving because of what we've done, and he thanks God that he still has that element of huanity remaining.
I also love how it breaks from the five lines about love and desire, and seems to break back almost brutally into "I hear them screaming...". It's almost as if he's imagining a better world, and how we could be more peaceful, then reality snaps him back out of it.
