Perhaps Im taking the vague route, but, to me, this song seems to be about being stuck in a situation that one really doesnt want to be in and the longing to be held on that safer ground. From the verses, one could say that he betrayed someone or did something to someone that he really regrets and just wishes to wash his hands of everything, wishes that it never happened in the first place.
