I haven't ever done this before but I'll give it a try.
I think he is talking about past regrets. He is talking about how he has given up to much of hiself emotionally to other people in the past.
It's almost like there is one girl specifically he broke up with that he keeps picturing his past experiences with and just can't forget about her.
