Is like he's asking why should we fall in love, just because we're lovers? Doesn't want to fall in love / commit to this person eg "Don't blame me for this sacrifice". Seems like a bad message to be giving but I think given how much he says he doesn't want to fall in love, and how much he questions the reasons "Why do lovers?" tends to suggest that he's too late and already in love.
