Then he goes and praises some other rockers who have done the same (Bono, Springsteen...suprised Morrissey didn't make the list...), and I think at the same time he's bragging about how that's what rock and roll is all about: protesting the way people think.

This whole verse sounds like Ed's either dreaming about what it'd be like if nobody stood up for what was right and the bad guys won all of the power, or he's dreaming of a day when the warriors finally have a place to speak. I'm not sure which.
"Whatever it's gonna take. Good luck! Keep it real."
He's saying that you need to keep things real - true - honest no matter what and good luck with that.
