Could this song have anything to do with religion? It seems to me that the advice to "stop apologising for things you've never done" could tie in with the notion that we should stop praying for forgiveness for basically having done nothing wrong (other than very petty things, and of course original sin), and that life could be much better if we just concentrated on the problems we have here and now instead of hoping for some better life afterwards.

In a word, no. It's about life in suburban England and what matters to people in their boring lives. How life can become so mundane that you crave attention, 'Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry.'
