I think the song title might be in refrence to the Olympus OM--2 camera. The song constantly refrences to photos and memories. Vasaline over the lense of a camera is something you do typically in college if your styding photography, which means I think he's refering to a girl her fell in and out of love with at a young age (also refrence to no defences and giving away his heart at a young age), what he's saying is that he despite having pictures to remind him, he doesn't need them because he's so scared by his love, that he lost.
