When I read the lyrics now, I think of the transition from the old year to the new. Maybe, George Harrison tried to write a song that should be played on the radio during the time between Christmas and New Years Eve. Maybe he tried, in doing so, to create a new type of song: the New Years Eve song (in analogy with the Christmas song).
The great and rather special thing about this song is of course that the chorus is a well known melody that a lot of door bells (used to) have. I mean, who would come up with that? Of course, the use of this melody also makes the song more of a good joke than a really great song and potential hit. But who cares. I think it would be a good thing if more artists would write songs like this one. A little humour harms no-one.
