I love how they take turns on the lines "Behind the melody, the words don't mean a thing / But every tune I play will give whatever I've not said away." It puts extra emphasis on it, which is, I think, what the basic gist of what the song is about.

I agree with shutitanddance in the sense that people only see the romanticized image of whoever's on stage.

But I also think that it's about the musician using that image as a shield so fans can never really get in, but they're kind of unsuccessful because they feel like their music gives them away just by its the melody.

Hence:
