I might get lynched for this, but, I like the Mayer version better than the Hendrix version. Hendrix may have invented alot of the moder guitar licks and that Blue/Rock sound -- don't get me wrong the guy was a total genius -- but people like Stevie Ray Vaughan (RIP) and John Mayer have totally perfected the sound and made it much more listenable.
I know many artist record their music in Lo-Fi.
Like John Frusciante, also a great fan of Hendrix'.
Somewhere there's a thin line to the 'white noise' that's added to the music.
Music must never ever sound clinical. And that is what newer versions by vaughan and mayer are. more clinical. less soul. am i close?
