That's beside the point. The song is about being in a relationship with someone that is so self-destructive that things need to end. You thought you knew who the other person was, and you thought you knew wo you were, but so much has gone on that the relationship can't go on anymore.
In Mike's verse he mentions feeling guilty and I think that the guilt comes from cutting the other person off. Not out of malice but because he needs to. Thus the lines in the chorus "But I, wont be there when you go down / Just so you know now /
