To me, He's lost someone and can't live without her. He's changed, his friends don't recongnize him anymore, he can't get peace, he wanders the places he used to ...with her. All the time, he refuses to let go, he burns to be with her, carries her memory with him all the time, its like he's living another life.
My fav line is either "I'm grateful to whistle past the grave yard gate" or "and life is pointless
