My sister and I spent hours trying to figure out what this song meant back then in the late 90s... ok, here's the result of our research:
This song is told from the POV of a dead woman. A ghost. During a depression, she mixed pills and alcohol and took the car for a drive. She crashed and now she's dead, 'lying next to someone', and surrounded by the spirits of other dead people 'don't mention the war, don't question where we stand, or where we fall'. She somehow feels sorry for what she did, and finally, she warns us from the afterlife 'don't believe the hype, expectancy will always spoil the party', meaning the 'other side' might not be like we believe or imagine it to be.

Now, that IS a far fetched interpretation!
